2.1 Installation Instructions

Note the PowerSeek PPC Plug-in requires that you have PowerSeek ver 2.3.2 installed on your host/server.

Step 1. UNZIP THE .ZIP ARCHIVE IN WHICH THE PLUGIN CAME

  • Unzip the .zip archive in which the plugin came.

Step 2 - COPY/FTP PROGRAM CGI SCRIPTS

  • The following directories should have been extracted when you extracted the contents of the .zip archive. The directories are: cgi, data and html

Copy/ftp the contents of the cgi directory into the directory that holds all the PowerSeek .cgi and .pm files.
If your ftp program tells you that ppc_ps.pm already exists, choose to overwrite the file.

Step 3 - COPY/FTP ADMIN CGI SCRIPTS

  • Inside the cgi directory that was extracted there will be an admin directory.

Now copy/ftp the files of the installation cgi/admin directory into the directory that holds the PowerSeek admin cgi script files. (.cgi and .pm files)

Step 4 - SET PERMISSION OF .cgi AND .pm FILES TO 755

  • Set all the .cgi and .pm files that you transferred in step 2 and 3 to the permission setting of 755. Click here if you don't know how to set file permissions.

Step 5 - COPY/FTP DATA FILES TEMPLATES

  • The following directories should have been extracted when you extracted the contents of the .zip archive. The directories are: cgi, data and html

Copy/ftp the contents of the data directory into PowerSeek's data directory. The PowerSeek data directory stores all the PowerSeek templates and other data files.

Step 6 - SET PERMISSION OF DATA FILES TO 777

Copy/ftp the contents of the html directory into PowerSeek's html directory.

Before PPC results can be included you will need to configure the PPC Plugin.

2.2 How to configure the PPC Plug-In

Once you have installed the Plug-In apply for an account at SearchFeed.com and/or Kanoodle.com, if you wish to use the BackFill option. After you have an account with the above-mentioned PPC Search Engines, come back to this section to configure the Plug-In.

To configure the plug-in, go to your PowerSeek Control Panel and click on 'Switch To PowerSeek PPC Admin Panel' - Then click the 'Settings' tab. Now click the 'Global Engine Settings' link.

Settings Explanation

This section is divided into 5 clearly marked parts. They are:

  • Default Behaviours

  • Display Options

  • URL Redirects

  • Useful Links

  • Backfilling

2.2.1 Default Behaviors

Manually Approve New PPC Links Added by Advertisers: This option gives you full control over all Listings posted by any advertiser. You may feel that you want to screen all Listings before they are made available to the public. This can protect your Website from potentially dangerous or unwanted / unlawful Listings.

The down side to this option is that you have to be very involved in the daily running of the Engine. You need to check the Control Panel often for Un-verified Listings. If you plan to not be involved in the daily running of the Engine or have little time to review Listings, it would be better not to enable this option as it would create a bad impression with advertisers if they wait days or weeks for Listings to be Verified.

Number of Search Results to Display at a time: If PowerSeek returns results, then the number specified here will be returned for the PowerSeek Internal PPC results.

Number of Search Results to Display in "No Match" Template:  If PowerSeek returns no search results the "No Match" template would be displayed. You may want to return more PowerSeek Internal PPC results if PowerSeek has no results. This option can be any numeric number between 1 and 10.

Minimum Bid Amount: It stands to reason that you cannot bid less than "0.01" cents. This is the default minimum bid and allowable bid increment amount. If however you want to change default behavior of bidding you can change it here. If you change the option to "0.05" then the minimum bid will be "0.05" cents. Advertisers will also only be able to bid in "0.05" increments. It is suggested that you not change the default behavior as it has shown to encourage bidding.

Minimum Account Balance: The lowest amount of money an advertiser's account can reach before he/she has to add new funds to it. Leave it empty for no minimum. Note that once an advertiser's balance goes below this amount then none of his/her PPC Links will be displayed.

Start Balance: This option enables you to give credit to any new Advertisers to the PPC Search Engine. It might also be a good idea to use it for promotional purposes.  When an advertiser register's his/her account then the advertiser's account will be credited with the amount specified here. If you leave it empty his/her account will be Zero. The advertiser must then deposit money into his/her account before his/her links will be returned in search results.

Append String to all Searches: This option can be used to localize search results. If you run a Search Engine in "Hawaii" for instance then you may want to append the word "Hawaii" to all user searches. This will return results that are local to Hawaii. Please beware of this option and use it only if your Website services a local community or hosts very specific content.

Reset Listings to Un-Verified when Edited by Advertiser?: If this setting is set to 'Yes' then all listings modified by advertisers will need to be approved by the administrator before they will be displayed with search results.

How to match PPC keywords when displaying PPC links with PowerSeek search results? When end users search for keywords then these keywords are matched against the keywords inside the PPC database containing the PPC links. Below is an explanation of how keywords are matched for the various options available in this setting:

Phrase Matches / Exact
Choosing this option has the effect of the keywords being searched for by visitors needing to match exactly with PPC Link keywords. For example, let's say an Advertiser asigned the keywords 'script', 'search' and 'search script' to his/her PPC link.

When visitors search for 'search script' then the PPC link will be displayed. If visitors search for 'script' then the PPC link will also be displayed. If the visitors search for 'good script' then the PPC link will not be displayed because there is not a phrase or whole word match.

Whole Word Matches
Phrase matching will not be done but whole words will be matched. Let's say a PPC Link has the following keywords: 'script' and 'search'

When visitors search for 'script' then the PPC Link will be returned. When they search for for 'scripts' then the PPC Link will not be returned because scripts does not as a whole match 'script'

When visitors search for 'search program' then the PPC Link will be returned because search matches one of the keywords of the PPC Link.

Partial Word Matches
Partial word matches (words that match within words) will be done when this option is chosen.  Let's say a PPC Link has the following keywords: 'script' and 'search'

When visitors search for 'scri' or 'script' then the PPC Link will be returned because scri or 'script' partially matches with script.

How to match PPC keywords when displaying PPC links in the IFRAME tag (external Web Pages or PowerSeek Categories):
See above: 'How to match PPC keywords when displaying PPC links with PowerSeek search results?'

2.2.2 Display Options

Next Page Text: The wording and any character you want displayed to indicate the link to the next page.

Previous Page Text: The wording and any character you want displayed to indicate the link to the previous page.

2.2.3 URL Redirects

URL to redirect a user that logs out of the Control Panel: You need to enter a URL (Internet Address) in this box. When the advertiser logs out of the Control Panel by clicking on the "Log Off" option he/she will be transferred to the address supplied here.

URL to redirect a user that registered as a PPC User: You need to enter a URL (Internet Address) in this box. When the advertiser registers for the first time you may want to take him to a thank you page or a page that explains the rules of the Website. You may enter the link address here.

Link to your order processor form: The way a user will add funds to his/her account will be by purchasing credit from you. You need to set-up an order processing system. You may use any system you prefer. Companies such as PayPal and WorldPay offer e-commerce services for processing orders. Once you have set-up such an account and the appropriate pages you may enter the URL (Internet Address) here. When a user clicks on the "Make Payment" tab in this Control Panel he will be directed to this page. Please contact PayPal or WorldPay if you need more information on this subject.

Your PPC Support Email Address: You may specify your main support Email address here. The Email address is used when displaying error messages. This will make it convenient and easy for users to ask questions and get help should they get stuck.

2.2.4 Useful Links

PPC User Registration: This is the actual link to the registration page where Advertisers can register for accounts. You can copy and paste this link directly to any page you want this link displayed on.

PPC User Login Link: This is the actual link to the Advertiser login page. You can copy and paste this link directly to any page you want this link displayed on.

Backfilling

Enable BackFill: Should you not have enough results for a particular search in the PowerSeek  PPC database then you can return Kanoodle.com and/or Searchfeed.com results. In this way you will get paid when a user clicks a link even though you may have only a few links in your database. This will be the result if the option is set to “Yes”.

Step 2. Kanoodle.com Section Explanation

Enable Kanoodle Feature - If you plan to use the Kanoodle search then you should set this to “Yes”. No search results from Kanoodle.com will be returned or displayed unless this option is set to “Yes”.

Affiliate ID Number: Can be found on the right hand side of the Webpage once you have logged into your account at Kanoodle.com

Enable BackFill: According to the kanoodle.com documentation they will supplement there own results with those of their back end provider(s). e.g.: You request 10 results, they have 8 bids on file for that keyword. They will deliver 8 paid results and two unpaid results. You should only use this option if it is included in your contract. This will be the result if the option is set to “Yes”.

Include "Adult ONLY" Results: This option will include material that is marked as "Adult Only" if there are any.

Return only Adult Results: This option will return only material that is marked as "Adult Only". If there is no "Adult Only" material it will display nothing.

Step 3. SearchFeed.Com Section Explanation

Enable Searchfeed Feature - If you plan to use Searchfeed search then you should set this to “Yes”. No search results from Searchfeed.com will be returned or displayed unless this option is set to “Yes”.

Account ID - Searchfeed.com ID. Can be found on the left hands side of the Webpage once you have logged into your account at SearchFeed.com

Track ID - Searchfeed.com ID. Can be found on the left hands side of the Webpage once you have logged into your account at SearchFeed.com

2.3 How to include PPC results with your PowerSeek search results

2.3.1 Add a PPC Link for testing purposes

Now that you have configured the PPC Plugin, you will need to edit your PowerSeek templates to include PPC links with your search results. Before doing this, register a dummy advertiser account so that you can verify that everything is in working order. In other words, we need at least one PPC Link inside the database so that we can see how it is displayed and where it is displayed with your PowerSeek search results.

To register a dummy account, load up the ppc_registration.cgi script inside your web browser. To log into the PowerSeek control panel you will normally load up:
http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/pseek/admin/login.cgi
To load the ppc_registration.cgi script in your browser you will need to load up:
http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/pseek/ppc_registration.cgi

Note that the URL paths used above is only fictional and for example purposes.

Now that you have loaded up the script where advertisers register accounts, fill in the form to register an account and follow the instructions to activate the account. After this, you will have an advertiser account. Log into the advertiser account (you will then be inside the Advertiser Control Panel) and click the 'Link Management' tab. Add a PPC link and assign some search keywords to it.

2.3.2  Edit your PowerSeek Search Template

Log into the PowerSeek Control Panel. (Not the PowerSeek PPC Control Panel) Now that you're logged in click on the 'Template Manager' tab. Scroll down and edit the template called searchres.html

You need to add the following variable word to the template: !!ppc_results!! where you would like PPC Links displayed.

Now that the template has been edited, the word !!ppc_results!! will be replaced by PPC Links when end-users of your search engine do searches.

Above, we are assuming you know the basics of editing PowerSeek templates. If you don't, please become familair with editing PowerSeek templates. Detailed and easy to understand instructions can be found here.

2.3.3  Do a Test Search

Do an end-user search for the link that you added in 2.3.1 - In other words, we want to do a normal PowerSeek search to see that the PPC Link is going to display. Search for one of the keywords that you added for the link that you added in  2.3.1

2.3.4  How to configure your 'No Match' PowerSeek Template

If you want to include PPC results when end-users search for keywords where a match could not be found in the PowerSeek database, do the following:

  • Go to the PowerSeek Control Panel >> Settings >> Global Engine Settings
Look for a setting that reads 'What to use when a search revealed no matches?'
Set this setting to: 'Use and the template called no_match.html'.

  • Go to the template manager and add the variable, !!ppc_results!! to the no_match.html template where you would like the PowerSeek Internal PPC search results displayed.

2.4  How to display PPC links inside PowerSeek categories

2.4.1 How it works

You can also display PPC links inside your PowerSeek categories. The way in which it works is that the PPC links are obtained/retrieved/searched using the keywords of categories. For example, when you create a category in PowerSeek you are normally prompted for the name of the category, a description and keywords. The keywords that has been used when you created the category will be used to fetch PPC links so that the PPC links being displayed is targeted at the contents of the category.

2.4.2 Adding PPC Links to PowerSeek categories

Here we will look at how you add PPC Links to your categories. Remember that if your categories have no keywords assigned then no PPC Links will be displayed inside your categories. To add keywords to your categories, go to the PowerSeek Control Panel >> Directory Manager and choose to edit directories.

Firstly the PowerSeek category templates needs to be edited to add support for displaying the PPC Links inside the categories. To do this, go to the PowerSeek Control Panel >> Template Manager and edit the template called: defdir.html

The PPC Links will be displayed by using an IFRAME HTML tag.

To create an IFRAME tag, add the following HTML code to the PowerSeek template:

<iframe frameborder="0" height="200" scrolling="no" width="750"
src="http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/pseek/ppc_if.cgi?keywords=!!keywords!!&page_nr=!!page_nr!!">
</iframe>

Replace the above path (yourdomain.com) with your own path to ppc_if.cgi

You will likely need to adjust the height and width of the IFRAME window according to your own preferences.

When you have added the IFRAME tag to the PowerSeek template, go to the PowerSeek Directory Manager and click the preview link next to a category. When you click the preview link, you will see the category with PPC Links if any links could be found according to the keywords of the category.

2.5 How to display PPC links on any external web page

You can also display PPC links on ordinary web pages. To do this, use the IFRAME tag as explained in 2.4.2 and insert it into your web page. Remember that you need to specify real keywords instead of !!keywords!! as explained in 2.4.2.

The IFRAME tag for an ordinary web page would then look something like this:

<iframe frameborder="0" height="200" scrolling="no" width="750"
src="http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/pseek/ppc_if.cgi?keywords=specify+keywords+here">
</iframe>

You can separate keywords with comma's or + signs.

2.6 How to customize PPC Links Look & Feel

The PPC Link displays works with templates (Much like PowerSeek's templates). To change the look and feel of the PPC links, go to the PowerSeek PPC Control Panel >> Template Manager - Edit the template called ppc_tmplsearch.html

Below is a description of the template variables that is available:

These variables are used for the PowerSeek Internal PPC, Kanoodle.com and SearchFeed.com Results.

!!ppc_title!!
Replaced by the Title of the link.

!!ppc_description!!
Replaced by the description of the link.

!!ppc_clickurl!!
Replaced by the URL of the link. The actual "<a href>" link the user will have to click on to register the click through.

!!ppc_bidprice!!
Replaced by the Bid Price of the link.

2.7 How to  Configure the 'No Match' PowerSeek Template

If you want to include PowerSeek PPC results when end-users searched for keywords where a match could not be found in the PowerSeek database, do the following:

  • Go to the PowerSeek Control Panel >> Settings >> Global Engine Settings
Look for a setting that reads 'What to use when a search revealed no matches?'
Set this setting to: 'Use and the template called no_match.html'.

  • Go to the template manager and add the variable, !!ppc_results!! to the no_match.html template where you would like the PowerSeek PPC search results displayed.

2.8 How to upgrade to newer versions of the PPC module

You can upgrade your existing PPC module when a new version of the PPC module is released. This should be a simple process and will take you a couple of minutes.

Step 1 - Download and extraction

Download the .zip installation archive of the PPC module. Extract the contents of the .zip installation archive.

Step 2 - Transfer .cgi and .pm files.

When you extract the .zip installation archive there is directories called 'cgi', 'data', 'doc' and 'html'. Transfer/ftp the contents of the 'cgi' directory to your PowerSeek directory where the PowerSeek .cgi and .pm files reside. Replace the old .cgi and .pm files of your existing PowerSeek installation with the new ones that comes from the .zip installation archive.

Step 3 - Set permissions of .cgi and .pm files.

Now ensure that all the .cgi and .pm files you transferred has the permission setting of 755 - If you are not sure how to check this, then you can set all the .cgi and .pm files to the permission setting of 755 - do not set/change the permission setting of config.cgi (leave it as it is) - You can find out how to set file permissions by clicking here.

After doing the above the upgrade of the PPC module will be complete.

Step 4 - Transfer Image Files

When you extracted the .zip installation archive there is directories called 'cgi', 'data', 'doc' and 'html'. Transfer the contents of the 'html' directory to the PowerSeek 'html' directory. The PowerSeek 'html' directory is the directory that holds the PowerSeek image files and the directory where HTML files are placed when generated.
