Question: Can category pages be indexed by search engines? (Are they search engine friendly so that search engines can index the pages and so that visitors can find the category pages via search engines)
Answer: If you run a static directory then the category pages are search engine friendly and can easilly be indexed by any search engine. The reason for this is because the URLs are not programmatic URLs but normal web URLs pointing to normal web pages.
