Many of us webmasters have paid for links but only recently I have found out that it is against Googles rules.
Google are now seeking those sites that sell links and also who are buying them.

You are kidding, right? Exactly where did you read that in Google's policies? I've read more Google myths online than I've heard urban ledgens my entire life.
Anyone can debunk the myth that Google only lists free search engines by simply visiting Google and typing 'search engines' to see for yourself that's not true. If you're such an expert with Goole's policies, why isn't your free search engine listed anywhere on Google? What's with that?
For that matter, I visited your local website directly and it appears you're not even using PowerSeek, but some free php script. That's fine, however I only found about 2 dozen links on your entire web site, and you have no traffic.
So, you got out of bed and built your new 24 link search engine empire. Now you're advising us to post only free links, based on what experience, exactly? |

I think the main thing google.com is concerned about is to provide people with what they are looking for. If it is so then the situation they are probably trying to avoid is to provide a set of results to people and people click to those results to find something that looks like the thing they were looking for but then get directed (via other links) to a site that has links that does not really have anything to do with what they are searching for. So the problem occurring is that paid links were just placed on high PR pages to boost the sites quality or (trust) but in reality (on some sites) the link was placed on an irrelevant page causing headaches to people looking for stuff.
At the end of the day I think google.com is concerned about outgoing links actually going nowhere and irrelevant to the site content.

Well Google is really getting down on all kinds of seo op moves. There looking for a more natural site growth and wanting to see content rich sites. Even when you go linking your site they will look for just how much the linked site is related to the content of your own site.
In the future it's going to be coming up with new software to or just rolling up the sleeves and giving them what they want. A lot of techniques that work today and seem ok will get the black hat trap consideration from google. But just do it naturaly and google will love you for it and so will your customers and visitors.

| You two have it pretty much right, I think. Good tips, thanks. If you would like to learn more about Google's paid link policy directly from the head of Google's Webspam team, here is a link to Matt Cutts' blog. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-to-report-paid-links |
