Hi-
My compliments on a great product - it looks like this is the program I have been looking for.
I just spent 45 minutes going through the forums and I have a few questions I was hoping could be answered:
1. What is the threshold for needing MySQL rather than text files? I read in one of the posts that it is 5000 links, but that seems high. Is that correct? How is turboseek performing a non-MySql based search?
2. What about PostgreSQL? I currently use Postgres, and would rather not install MySQL if I can avoid it - also the trend in the industry is toward Postgres...
3. What are your recommendations for importing categories as well as links (for example, if I want to start a section by importing from dmoz and then edit it to my liking)
4. Are we limited to 5 banner ads per page? This seems low, given that banner can include small ads also.
5. Can banner ads be displayed on all pages or just index.html and category pages? I would like to show ads on every single page if possible. If not, can you identify where ads aren't available?
6. Why do file permissions need to be set to 777? I saw in one post where you explained how to allow 755 permissions. Are there any ramifications of doing this?
7. How would you compare this program to Hyperseek and Links Extended 2.0? What are the tradeoffs as you see them? |

I would say the thresold would be around 15 000. This threshold exists because things can really slow down if you search through a 10MB text file. Using mysql on the other hand will speed things up.

Postgresql is not supported at this point in time but if there is a need for this we will most likely be implement it in future versions.

At this stage Turbo Seek can import comma delimited text files for specific categories. You can also use the crawler to fetch titles, descriptions and keywords of urls.

At this stage the limit is 5 per category page. You can add more but the banners won't be able to be targeted.

Banner ads can be displyed on all pages anywhere but targeting is only available for categories.

It does not necessarilly need to be 777 (777 is most probably the safest way to go in terms of host/server compatibillity)
One of the main reasons for this is to enable users to move/backup & restore the data files of their directory/search engine.
One example :
When the web server creates files via a script, the file is created with the UID (user ID) of the web server. Many web servers will by default assign the permission setting of 644 to the files created by scripts. This leaves the ftp user (owner of search engine) powerless to restore/replace files that have been backed up.

I have not yet tried hyperseek to the point where I will be able to provide you with accurate answers. Maybe it's a good idea to compare the 2 for yourself. |
