I'm having trouble with these two tags. Granted the "modifyurl" tag isn't listed in my templates anywhere, although you've used it in one of your examples. I'm presuming it must be valid somehow though - or perhaps I have the syntax wrong.
As for "current_cat", it just doesn't work. All it shows is the actual text "%%current_cat%%. Any thoughts on how to make it work?
And finally, is there any way I can modify the string of variables that shows where in the directory structure you are so that the current area (the last one) can be bold and the others not?

%%current_cat%% has been introduced in later versions of Turbo Seek. I would advise that you upgrade your copy. You can find the latest version at:
