Topic: Ideas to be Implemented Before 2.1 is Released (Hopefully) |

I thought that these may be some simple things you could do to improve the software product before releasing the next minor version:
Less Time Consuming:
(1) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add a link at the top of the page of every admin section that would open the main page of the directory in a new window.
(2) Please remove the Powerseek logo from the main admin page. I know it looks cool and all, but advertising what program you are using is a good way to entice hackers to try and break into your site. I know they can probably find out in other ways, but why make it easy on them?
(3) Would it be possible to have the random number generator used with the banner manager be server side? I know it's cool to randomly select the banner, but doing everything server side is better in my opinion.
(4) Could you create a logout link on every page in the admin section? The only way I know how to log out right now is to close the browser.
More Time Consuming:
(4) Is there any way that you could implement a MOVE CATEGORY function? I know there is a fairly easy work around to it right now, but it would save me those few precious seconds.
(5) Can you make the default template for powerseek a little more plain? It would probably be a lot easier for new users to customize. Bonus if you can do it in XHTML and CSS.
(6) Would it be possible to make a script that could be called via CRON that would automatically check for broken links on a regular basis? I'm sure you could probably do it now but I am not quite sure how.
These are just suggestions that I have that I think could benefit everyone using your software. I could probably think of more, but that would be for the next MAJOR release. :-p
Thanks,
Chris Carlson

Oh yeah, I forgot one more that I wanted to suggest - as if what I've already said isn't enough work.
I was wondering if it would be possible to automatically include search results from ODP. Maybe as an option in the pull down menu (i.e. entire directory, just this category, the web and when "the web" is selected, ODP results are shown). I think this would add significant value to this piece of software.

Okay, I can't help myself. lol Would it be possible to tone down the graphics in the admin section and spare the sanity of us modem users? Yes, we live in the stone age but some of us don't have a choice.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your suggestions. We'll consider it for development in this beta version or future coming versions.

I seem to be having trouble understanding. Could you explain more clearly. Thanks.

The random numbers are there so that banners are not cached. At a glance I think generating it on the server side would not be practical because SSI would need to be used. We'll check it out anyway.
----------------
In your 'data' directory there is a file called 'control_panel.html' - edit it and remove the graphics. Do not remove the button tab graphics.
All graphics you see in the control panel is more or less 15k-20k alltogether in size. Icon images and buttons are usually around 0.5k each or less.

Clarifying (1):
I'll use my site as an example. When I am in the administration section, I would like there to always be a link at the top of the page that, when clicked, would open my web site's main page (i.e. http://www.qcsearch.com/). So up where you have the support and documentation buttons you would have a button that says "View Your Site" or something to that effect.
Response to (3):
Couldn't you call a random function in perl to just tack on the end of the img url and accomplish the same effect? |

I might be wrong but you can add the link to your main page in the control_panel.html file, just edit the html to your liking.
