When adding html to extra fields like links, it takes fine and displays fine in the directory. However, when editing in the admin, it gets screwed up! Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Thanks

Check that your HTML code doesn't have errors. Some times when tags are not closed it may interfere with the actual displays of the boxes in the control panel.

Nope. That isn't it. It happens every single time. I now have to make sure I copy shortcut before editng any listing with links in extra fields.
Here is what displays in general every time in the input field
For v4.x Only <a href=
and this is what appears just outside the end of the input field.
Upgrade Now" style="font-family: MS Sans Serif; font-size: 8">
Here is the actual code placed in input field originally that displays fine except when editing:
<a href="http://www.emporiumplus.com/store4.mvc?p=1AA00022U&Affiliate=jasonh" target="_blank">Upgrade Now</a>
The format of this extra field is:
characters and 250 characters allowed.
