2.1 How to set up a Download and Manage Downloads

This section instructs you how to set up a file download so that the number of downloads for the file can be counted. You may also add functionality where visitors can subscribe to your newsletter for example when downloading the file.

2.1.1 Supplying a name for the download and providing the URL for it.

First log into the Admin Control Panel of Download Monitor Pro. After that click the 'Download Trackers' tab. Then click on the 'Add Tracker' button. After that you are prompted to supply the following:

  • Tracker Name: This can be any name that you must choose. If the file that is to be downloaded is called: somefile.zip then you could call it: SomeFile for example.

  • URL to File: This would be the URL to the file that is to be downloaded.

2.1.2 Defining extra fields for a download

After supplying a name for the Download and a path to the URL for the file that is to be downloaded, you will be provided with the option of defining extra fields for the download. With 'extra fields' you can record additional information from visitors who downloads the file from you. You may want to know their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and where they heard about your web site. This would be where you add additional questions to collect these details.

Below is an explanation of what to supply for the 'Field Description' and 'Required' options:

  • Field Description: This would be the question for additional information you would ask the visitor who would like to download the file. You can ask up to 10 additional questions where the visitor needs to supply information.

  • Required: If this box is checked then the visitor downloading the file will be required to provide an answer to the question asked.

2.1.3 Setting up an Auto Responder

The 'Autoresponder' functionality will send a visitor downloading the file an email after he/she has downloaded the file if you enable the Autoresponder. Note that if the visitor downloading the file does not provide an email address, then an email will not be sent to the visitor downloading the file.

2.1.4 Getting the Download Form (HTML Code) to Place in Your Web Pages

After you have set up some downloads, (or created Download Trackers) you can then click on the 'Get Code' link next to the Download Trackers that are listed. (From the Control Panel >> Download Trackers Tab)

When you click on the 'Get Code' link a Popup Window will appear. You will be asked if you would like to include a subscription box with the Download Form. If you would like that then you can present the option to visitors downloading the file to subscribe to your Newsletter for example. If you have created/defined extra fields for the download then you will be presented with the option to include the extra fields for the download. The extra fields enables you to collect additional information from visitors downloading the file.

After choosing if a subscription box should be included or not and choosing the extra fields to be included you can press the next button. After that you will be presented with HTML code that you can copy and paste into your web pages where you would like the download form to be included.

2.1.5 Changing the URL of a download

Note that if the visitor downloading the file does not provide an email address, then an email will not be sent to the visitor downloading the file. Note that you can set it up so that a visitor is required to provide an email address before being able to download the file.

2.2 How to Manage Subscriptions

2.2.1  How visitors downloading files can subscribe

When obtaining the HTML code for the download form you can specify whether a subscription box must be included or not. The subscription box enables you to provide visitors with the option of subscribing to your Newsletter or any other email like email about program updates/upgrades/promotions, etc. when downloading a file. You can use Download Monitor Pro to send email to visitors that checked the subscription box.

2.2.2  How to let visitors who downloaded files unsubscribe

If you include a subscription checkbox with the download form, a link is automatically included in the download form which visitors downloading files can click at a later stage to unsubscribe from your Newsletter for example. You can also place this link in any emails that is being sent to visitors who checked the subscription box when downloading a file so that they can click on it to unsubscribe. When the link is clicked, the visitor is asked to supply his/her email address so that it can be removed from the mailing list.

2.2.3  Customizing the look and feel of unsubscribe pages

2.4.3  Personalizing email sent to visitors who downloaded files

The Mailer that comes with Download Monitor Pro enables you to use any information provided by visitors when downloading files in emails you send them. In other words, if you required visitors downloading files to provide their name, then you can personalize the email you send them by including their name. This is accomplished with variables. If you configured the first extra field to be the field where a visitor needs to enter his/her name then you could include %%field1%% in the email message which will be replaced by the downloader's name.
